7,18,457The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has fined The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) Rs 29.6 lakh for failing to adhere to specific credit card operation guidelines.
This action, taken on 24 June 2024, addresses HSBC's non-compliance with the mandated calculation procedures for determining the minimum payment due on credit card accounts. The central issue cited by the RBI is HSBC's calculation method leading to "negative amortization," a situation where a cardholder's balance increases due to the applied interest and fees surpassing the minimum payments made, potentially trapping customers in a debt cycle.
The fine underscores the importance of abiding by RBI's credit card rules, which are designed to prevent debt spirals among users. HSBC customers are advised to review their statements for accuracy in minimum payment calculations and contact customer service for any discrepancies.
There is a joining fee of Rs.12,000 and an annual fee of Rs.20,000. However, the annual fee is waived if you are a Qualified Premier customer.
The forex markup fee charged by HSBC Premier Credit Card is 0.99% of the transaction amount. It is amongst the lowest markup fees charged by super-premium credit cards, which makes it suitable for international transactions.
